A Japandi-Inspired Stress-Relieving Office Space
Our goal with this project was to take this blank slate of an office from uninspiring and uninviting to one that positively radiates functionality, focus and flow. The challenge in making the most of this space came from its layout—with the entry and closet doors being on opposite walls but all opening into the relatively small square footage of the room. Add to that a large window that takes up a good portion of the third wall, and decidedly does not fit the Japandi-meets-Mid Century aesthetic we were going for, and this was our jumping-off point.
The Blank Slate
The Design Plan
This gorgeous wood slat paneling played a few roles in the design. Not only did it add warmth to the space and visual interest as a video background for work, it also provided acoustic benefits that literally changed the feeling of the room around you. Plus, the wood paneling became the perfect solution for creating a hidden floor-to-ceiling sliding door to the closet to create more uninterrupted floor space. (And just be really cool!)
The WoodUpp company also offers a variety of accessories to use with their acoustic panels, like shelves, hooks, and lighting. We used some of their shelves to break up the wall, showcase artwork and decor, and add more dimension to the room.
Next, we color drenched the room in Sherwin Williams Sea Salt, an airy and fresh light green with a touch of blue—that we think, honestly, looks good in just about any space. Then, we added a ceiling-mounted track with a full-length natural linen curtain spanning the entire wall. It filters in the natural light from the big window beautifully, while also helping it seamlessly blend into the rest of the design.
Our limited color palette includes black furniture and gray- and cream-colored swivel and desk chairs. The seating fabric choices also add texture and evoke a sense of coziness, while this amazing single-colored, hi-low, organically shaped rug pulls it all together.
In the end, our client wound up with a one-of-a-kind office he now enjoys sneaking away to—for both business and pleasure.
